Mexico City keeps on sinking

Geologists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have warned that the sinking of Mexico City (CDMX) could lead to uninhabitable zones within the next decade.

The city experiences a sinking rate of 10 to 30 centimeters per year, with some areas sinking up to 40 centimeters annually. This is caused by over-extraction of underground water and the weight of buildings, which is compressing the clay and volcanic soil beneath the city.

This issue is most evident with the Angel of Independence monument, which requires an additional step to be added periodically due to the ground sinking beneath it.

The situation is worsening, with 70 percent of Mexico City’s land being prone to flooding, especially during the rainy season.
