Guitar classic at Teatro Degollado

The world-famous “Concierto de Aranjuez” will be one of the highlights of a special concert to be given by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, also featuring the Jalisco State Choir, on Sunday, September 29, 12:30 p.m.  The guest conductor will be Armando Pesqueira, the current director of the Chihuahua Philharmonic Orchestra.  The invited guitarist is Pablo Garibay, a well-known Mexican performer and teacher.

Composed in 1939 by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, “Concierto de Aranjuez” was inspired by the gardens at Palacio Real de Aranjuez, outside Madrid. Rodrigo was blind since the age of three and, interestingly, was a pianist and did not play the guitar.

The concerto’s adagio is probably the most famous and most recognizable part of the piece and has been used in numerous movies, television shows and commercials.

The rest of the program also features popular pieces.  The Jalisco State Choir will interpret “the Magnificat,” one of British composer John Rutter’s most well-known large-scale choral works.  The final piece is Bedrich Smetana’s “The Moldau,” the second of the six symphonic poems that form his musical homage, “My Fatherland” to the Czech Republic.

Teatro Degollado, Sunday, September 29, 12:30 p.m. 110-200 pesos.
