Local author to speak at Notre Dame

Michael Hogan, author and historian, has been chosen to give the Distinguished Lecture at the University of Notre Dame this month.

pg6bHis topic will be “Irish Americans and Mexican Americans: Their Struggles and Contributions.” The lecture and subsequent discussion has been organized by the Institute for Irish Studies and the Faculty of Latino Studies at Notre Dame.

Hogan, emeritus humanities chair of the American School of Guadalajara, is the author of twenty-eight books, including the “Irish Soldiers of Mexico” which was the inspiration for an MGM film starring Tom Berenger and two documentaries. His lifelong interest in Mexican and Irish history, as a well as a doctorate in Latin American history, have led him to produce a series of major works, including “Abraham Lincoln and Mexico” (2017), which is now part of the curricula in over 800 schools and colleges in the US and Mexico, and his most recent work, “Mexicans and Mexican Americans: Remarkable Lives, Unforgettable Stories” (2023), which is based on a series of articles he has written for The Guadalajara Reporter where he is a frequent collaborator.

After leaving Notre Dame, Hogan will travel to Chicago where he will present a series of talks to students and faculty at the prestigious St. Ignatius College Prep, as well as to the public, before returning home to Guadalajara. He will be accompanied by his wife, Lucinda Mayo, a well-known textile artist and translator. Hogan’s trip is sponsored by Cabrera Capital Markets LLC, the leading Latino-owned investment bank in the United States.
