‘Godmother of punk’ visits Guadalajara

Patti Smith, the 77-year-old Chicago-born singer, poet and activist, has brought a unique audiovisual project and sensory experience, involving sound, film, installation and performance, to Guadalajara within the framework of the International Music Fair (FIMPRO).

pg9cTalking this week to media at the University of Guadalajara’s majestic Paraninfo auditorium, Smith explained that “Correspondences” evolved over a decade of communication with Stephan Crasneanscki of the Soundwalk Collective.

“Soundwalk gave me the opportunity to return to my roots in poetry, magnifying verb and language, infused with political, environmental and humanistic concerns and, of course, sacrifice for art,” she said. “With Soundwalk I feel like I can express so many things that matter to me: the destruction of nature, global fires, people being displaced, the sea flooding with plastic, the sound of sonic exploration and the ambition for oil.”
