Heavy machinery and work crews moved into the Guadalajara city center this week as the Jalisco government and Guadalajara City Hall launched an ambitious project to impress soccer fans arriving for next year’s World Cup.
This comprehensive renovation of the Historic Center will transform the downtown zone into “the most beautiful heart in all of Mexico,” Mayor Verónica Delgadillo boasted during the project’s kickoff. The first phase will see more than 450 million pesos (US$24 million) invested.

The project stretches from Plaza Liberación to the Cabañas Cultural Institute and includes the renovation of iconic plazas, fountains, streets and historic spaces. It aims to create modern infrastructure, improve accessibility and make the urban environment more friendly for both residents and visitors. Extensive fencing has already been erected to ensure public safety during the ongoing work.
