After a sold-out performance of her first solo album “One Wing” on October 10 at Guadalajara’s Conjunto Santander, Maria Camarena appears to be at a point in her career where she is recognized more for her voice and creativity than for the novelty of being a blind singer.
As Camarena explained during a session at her producer’s sound studio in Guadalajara’s Santa Teresita colonia a few days after the performance, the idea of the album’s title “is to go ahead and fly despite only having one wing”—an obvious reference to her visual challenge and maybe to the fact she has long worked with bands but is now working alone for the first time. (Born in Guadalajara but remarkably fluent in foreign experiences and languages including English, Camarena has long blazed a unique, culture-bridging path.)
