The very first program rolled out by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (OFJ) for 2025 has created a flurry of excitement.
The invitation to Guadalajara’s acoustically excellent Teatro Degollado of the “frighteningly awesome” Spanish violinist Francisco Fullana paired with Erich Korngold’s Violin Concerto is something of a sensation.
The work of Korngold, an enthusiast of late Romantic music and a refugee from Nazi Germany who took up residence in Hollywood, seems the perfect complement to Fullana’s emotive playing, not least because the piece has a colorful, nine-instrument percussion section including timpani, gong, tubular bell and more. The rest of the program consists of two melodic symphonies by Mozart and a piece by late Romantic master Richard Strauss. That program, with OFJ director José Luis Castillo at the podium, is Thursday, February 6, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, February 9, 12:30 p.m.—the same Thursday-Sunday schedule for all eight concerts of the season.
