Film Festival screens ‘The American Dream & Other Fairy Tales’ and ‘Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb’

The 2024 “Movies That Matter” series hosted by the Democrats Abroad Lake Chapala Chapter is underway every Sunday and Thursday at 2  p.m. throughout March at the Cine+Lago Theater at Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic.

“The American Dream & Other Fairy Tales” (Sunday, March 17), produced by Abigail Disney, is a powerful and timely insider exposé of the widening economic inequality that is shattering the American dream and its promise of upward mobility for many Americans. Disney examines American capitalism to show how today’s business ethics have deteriorated, and uses her family’s story to explore how systemic injustices have taken hold, and what could provide employees with a more equitable future.

To better understand the moral and ethical questions raised in the Oscar-winning “Oppenheimer,” the documentary “Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb” (Thursday, March 21) is a “must see.” It probes the motives and complex technical challenges behind the frenetic, emotional race by the team of Europe’s top scientists, most of whom had fled Nazi persecution, and U.S. scientists striving to end World War II. Its legacy today is both significant scientific innovations and looming fear of a devastating nuclear war.

Individual tickets for US$8.75 can be purchased at the door or online at democratsabroad.org/312781/film_festival_2024. Ask about the special “memory stick” with films offered for those who can’t attend all the movies. A Scallion’s 10-percent food discount is available each film day for Season Pass holders. Proceeds will support non-partisan Voter Assistance at Lakeside.
