Howard Willis, the founder of the Ajijic Opera Guild (Amigos de Chapala Opera, A.C.), is thrilled about Lakeside Little Theatre’s upcoming MET Live opera season, which kicks off on Sunday, October 13, with Les Contes d’Hoffmann.
LLT will present nine operas, including iconic productions such as Aida, The Magic Flute, Tosca and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, all filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. These performances will be projected in the theater’s main auditorium, equipped with a state-of-the-art screen and sound system.
“Until you’ve experienced the Met on the big screen with the powerful sound at LLT, you’re missing an incredible experience right here in our little pueblo,” Willis says. “It’s better than being in New York — for a fraction of the cost.”
Willis’ love for Mexico began as a Spanish-language student in Guanajuato. After he retired to lakeside with his wife, Allegra, he became fascinated by opera when he started attending the Met Live simulcasts then being screened at the Teatro Diana in Guadalajara.
