There are few things more satisfying than a well-done comedy. Bare Stage’s final production of 2024 is Graham Linehan’s stage adaptation of the hilarious 1955 film “The Ladykillers,” starring Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom.
Chock full of chortle-inducing moments, “The Ladykillers” premiered in 2011 to rave reviews at the Gielgud Theatre in London, embarking on a national tour the following year.
“The Ladykillers” is a typically dry yet dark comedy set in London’s King’s Cross area, revolving around a group of small-time gangsters who plot a bank robbery. The mobsters go undercover as a string quartet renting rooms in the home of the kindly elderly lady, Mrs. Wilberforce, who lives on a dead-end street.
However, they soon realize they have underestimated Mrs. Wilberforce when the busybody old lady interferes in their affairs. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs. Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men.
This is black comedy at its very best!
Rosann Balbontin directs a brilliant cast: Mark Donaldson, Fred Koesling, Kathleen Pharis, Lynn Phelan, Phil Rylett, Rob Stupple, Patrick Trotter and John Ward.
