A timeless classic, ‘The Magic Flute,’ at LLT

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will host the fourth screening of its nine-opera season: “The Magic Flute,” arguably the most popular opera ever written, from January 4 to 6.

“If anyone wants to experience an opera for the first time, this is the one,” says Opera Wire. “Perfect for audience members to draw close and dream ... an unforgettable performance given by a cast of all-stars who felt like family.”

LLT President Collette Clavadetscher concurs: “This opera, sung in English, has it all—something to please everyone, even children. A dashing prince who falls helplessly in love with a beautiful princess, a monster, a perilous quest, an evil queen, courage, betrayal, and the ultimate triumph of virtue. And then, of course, there’s the wondrous music.”

When Mozart composed “The Magic Flute” in 1791, he included the Queen of the Night’s aria, a dazzling piece sung in rage as she orders her daughter Pamina to kill the hero, Sarastro. The aria showcases virtuoso vocal feats, including rare high Fs, written especially for his sister-in-law, who had an extraordinary vocal range.

This production, filmed live at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, features fantastical costumes and mesmerizing flying puppets. It’s a stunning, magical extravaganza which, as The New York Classical Review eulogizes, “brings a double helping of Mozartian holiday delight.”

“The Magic Flute” will be projected in LLT’s main auditorium. All performances begin at 4 p.m. Tickets cost 350 pesos and are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com. Patrons who present an INE (Mexican voter credential) card when purchasing tickets at the box office will receive a 100-peso discount.
