LLT hosts edgy, hilarious drama

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) will host another National Theatre Live (NTL) filmed production, “Fleabag,” January 25 and 26.

pg21aThe one-woman, award-winning play, written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the first time in 2013, went on to become one of the most popular British comedy TV series of all time.

It is a “rare piece,” praised The Guardian, “... a filthily funny show about a young single woman who responds to two significant deaths with frequent, insignificant sex ….” The performance is “witty … supreme.”

What’s On Stage (as well as most other reviewers) also gave the play five stars: “... the power of Fleabag resides in the combination of … moments of pure hilarity with an undertow of sadness so profound that it hurts. Every feeling flits across Waller-Bridge’s face; she never overplays anything but she makes us always remember the tragedy that her flawed heroine has brought into her own life. It’s a terrific performance, beautifully realised, burnishing the legend that the star has already created.”

“I love these National Theatre Live films,” shared Amanda Timmis, who coordinates many such productions for LLT. “Like most people, I could never afford a ticket to a New York City or London play, which could cost hundreds of dollars. But, with NTL, for a very reasonable price (350 pesos, 250 for anyone showing an INE card at the box office), I get much better than a front row seat. And, of course, LLT’s state-of-the-art screen and sound system makes the performance simply stunning.”

Both performances of “Fleabag” at LLT, Saturday, January 25 and Sunday January 26, begin at 4 .pm. Tickets are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com and before the shows at the box office.
