LLT broadens its scope of community

During 2024, Lakeside Community Theatre (LLT) dramatically increased its outreach to and inclusion of the Lakeside Mexican community, while raising substantial funds for local Mexican nonprofits.

pg21a“For much of our 60-year history, most people saw LLT as a community theatre primarily by and for expats,” explained President Collette Clavadetscher. “I think we saw ourselves that way. More recently, we realized that we could be so much more, become a community theatre for all Lakeside. We’re tremendously proud of what we accomplished last year.”

Indeed, LLT hosted fund-raising performances by the Festival del Lago, the Coro Femenino Mayahuel, the University of Guadalajara Chamber Choir, Mariachi Real Ajijic, and CREM (Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales). The Instituto Loyola de Chapala held its graduation ceremonies there. LLT Production Manager Lynn Gutstadt summarized, “It was a busy but fulfilling year!”

“What a wonderful experience!” effused Emmanuel Medeles, who directs CREM. “From the first moment, the warmth with which LLT welcomed us made us feel very comfortable and safe. In addition, the quality of the space created a very professional atmosphere. The technicians and volunteers provided a truly exceptional service.”

In addition, LLT’s largest mainstage show of the year, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” featured Mexican actors playing two of the three leading roles. Mariachi lead singer Luis Sanchez, who played Judas, became emotional when he described what an accepting home he found at LLT: “Superstar literally changed my life ... It was like being in a seven-month master class in English, music, singing, dancing, and acting. As a Mexican guy, I’m so proud to have crossed the language line on and off stage…. I met incredible people and friends who made me believe that I could do everything I set my mind to.”

Reported LLT Treasurer Thomas Gay, “All told, we raised more than 285,000 pesos last year for local nonprofit organizations, and this year we’ve begun to offer discounted tickets for all our shows to anyone presenting an INE (Mexican voting credential) card at the box office.”

LLT Vice President Dave McIntosh has begun discussions about the theatre hosting its first ever Spanish-language play, perhaps even a musical. “LLT is not just for expats any more. We’re becoming everyone’s community theater.”
