‘Movies That Matter’: Festival highlights powerful global stories and social issues

Nine films from the United States and Europe will be screened at 2 p.m. every Sunday and Thursday in March at the Cine+Lago Theater in Plaza Bugambilias, Ajijic.

pg23aThis annual non-profit event is hosted by the Democrats Abroad Lake Chapala Chapter to raise funds for its non-partisan U.S. voting support services, which will continue at Lakeside to assist with special elections in 2025.

The festival opens Sunday, March 2, with “Bad Faith: Christian Nationalism’s Unholy War on Democracy,” an alarming exposé of a growing extremist ideology. The documentary reveals the secretive political machinery seeking to weaken American democracy by promoting an authoritarian vision. The filmmakers call on religious leaders and viewers to defend religious freedom and the separation of church and state.

On Thursday, March 6, the festival presents another documentary, “Antisocial Network: Memes to Mayhem,” which chronicles the rise of the alt-right “QAnon” movement, from its origins among bored teenagers to its role in the January 6 Capitol riot. The film explores how online communities can evolve into hubs of misinformation and real-world chaos.
