Cynthia Du Bois, one of the founders of the Plein Air Painters of Jalisco, will be showcasing her recent works at an exhibit opening on Friday, May 2, at Casa del Sol Inn. A Meet the Artist reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.
Lakeside is home to an array of artists, each with their own unique style, but Du Bois has a particular fondness for painting outdoors—bugs, wind and all. Her exhibit, “En plein air,” celebrates the art of painting outdoors, a technique that became popular in the 1800s with the Impressionists, when paints were first put into tubes. This innovation allowed artists to take their easels and paints into the open air, rather than being confined to their studios. Today, plein air painting remains a popular method worldwide.
Du Bois explains, “The process involves completing a piece in one sitting. While some artists may choose to make final touches in their studios, the essence of plein air is capturing a scene on the spot. It’s a wonderful way for retirees to stay active and creative while enjoying the outdoors. It’s so healthy, and it’s a much better use of time than just watching TV all day.”
Du Bois is particularly drawn to the cityscapes of Latin America, especially the old, crumbling buildings. “I have a romantic connection with these subjects,” she says. “I try to express the poetry of the decaying structures and the stories they tell.”
The exhibit will be on display at Casa del Sol Inn through June 30.
