Ribera Arts Review - November 16, 2013

The 12th annual Feria Maestros del Arte runs Friday, November 15 through Sunday, November 17 at the Chapala Yacht Club.

Artists and artisans from around Mexico will be offering textiles and clothing, ceramics, masks, Huichol bead and yarn arts, jewelry, toys and dolls, lacquer ware, household furnishings, and a cornucopia of articles fashioned from stone, wood, metal, paper, gourds, straw, palm fronds, cornhusks and pine needles, as well as high quality publications on Mexican art and culture.

Gates open daily at 10 a.m., closing at 5 p.m. on Friday and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is set at 50 pesos per person.  

ECA craft show

The fall edition of the tri-annual Expo Chapala Artesenal (ECA) arts and craft fair is booked for Friday, November 15 through Sunday, November 17 at La Vela plaza, located at the far west end of the Chapala Malecon. The event is open to the public free of charge, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Shoppers will find great deals on goods made by Chapala area craftsmen, including hand-embroidered clothing, typical huarache footwear and other leather goods, Wixirika Indian beadwork, jewelry and fashion accessories, hand-loomed textiles, corn husk flowers and figurines, and an array of decorative items for the home and garden such as ceramic and ironwork pieces, pre-Columbian reproductions, bonsai plants and containers and original paintings by lakeside artists.

Rock ‘N’ Reggae

Ten percent of ticket sales from a Rock ‘N’ Reggae concert on Sunday, November 17 at Villa Encantada will go to the Lakeside School for Children with Special Needs (formerly School for the Deaf).
The Tallboys Band kick off the concert at 5 p.m., with King David Bailey on stage at 7 p.m.  
Number Four chef Glenroy will be preparing St. Louis-style pork ribs, with corn on the cob. There will be a punch, beer and wine bar.

General admission tickets cost 200 pesos. A seat in the VIP area costs 350 pesos. Doors open at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, or from Number Four (Donato Guerra 4, Ajijic) and Diane Pearl’s Colecciones.
Villa Encantada is located at Hidalgo 312 (the Ajijic-Chapala highway), next to the small waterfront park just after Riberas del Pilar.

Naked Stage

The Naked Stage Theater presents “No Exit,” a play by Jean-Paul Sartre, directed by Shirley Appelbaum, on Friday, November 22; Saturday, November 23,and Sunday, November 24, at 4 p.m. on each day.

The existentialist play is a depiction of the afterlife in which three deceased characters are punished by being locked into a room together for eternity.

The cast features Sandy Appelbaum, Elliot Gould, Fred Koesling, Florette Schnelle and Kat Tetrault.
The Naked Stage is located at Rio Bravo 10, in west Ajijic. The bar opens at 3 p.m and the box office at 3:15 p.m.   A donation 80 pesos is required.

To reach the Naked Stage turn left on Rio Bravo and drive two blocks toward the lake. The theater is behind Daniel’s Restaurant.

‘Let’s Do It Again’

Mac Morison will be kicking off the holiday season singing classic romantic songs  with guest vocalist Judy Hendrick at the one-off “Let’s Do It Again” show to help the Ajijic Fire Department purchase much needed equipment.
A special surprise will be guest comic Jeff Capri opening for Mac. Capri has been seen on Comedy Central, Comics Unleashed and Last Comic Standing. He has just returned from entertaining U.S. troops overseas.

The ticket price is 300 pesos (includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres). There will be a full no-host bar.

The date is Wednesday, December 4. The location is Club Exotica on the Ajijic Plaza. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Auditions

The Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) has announced auditions for “Hooray for Hollywood,” a musical show to be staged from February 21 though March 4, 2014.  Auditions take place this weekend, Friday and Saturday, November 15 and 16, at 9.30 a.m. at the theater.  Barbara Clippinger is looking for eight singers and eight dancers, plus four males who are non-dancing/singing.  Bring a CD or sheet music for your audition song.  For scripts and information, contact Barbara at This email address is being protected from spambots. Viva la Musica

Viva la Musica presents a special holiday concert, “Opera and Christmas Music Between Friends,” in the Auditorio de la Ribera on Friday, December 6, 6 p.m.

The concert features Gaby Zepeda, piano and soprano; Antonio Hermosillo, baritone; Patricia Hernandez, mezzosoprano; Hector Lopez, baritone; and children Mariana, Lucia and Jorge Hermosillo, who will sing and play the violin.

Hernandez and Lopez are familiar to many lakesiders as exceptional former students of the late Harlan Snow. Both are now professional musicians, teaching and singing in Mexico.

Tickets cost 200 pesos for Viva members, 300 pesos for general admission. They are on sale at the Lake Chapala Society on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m to noon; the auditorium and at Diane Pearl Colecciones.

Los Cantantes

Equine therapy

A Mexican fiesta fundaiser for the Pepe Martinez Equine Therapy Center, is scheduled December 14, 2 p.m. at  Rancho La Ilusion, located off the Chapala-Ajijic Libramiento.  Tickets cost 50 pesos and are available at Yoly’s Unisex Salon, Plaza Bugambilias or DIF Chapala.

Hot jazz

Tickets for the Jazz Greats concerts on Saturday, January 11 and Sunday, January 12, 2014 are now available at Diane Pearl’s boutique on Colon and Mostly Chocolate at Constitución 39.

This show at the Auditorio de la Ribera in Ajijic is likely to be the hottest jazz event ever staged at Lakeside, featuring the world-class Guido Basso Quartet and guest singer Molly Johnson.  

All proceeds go to Niños Incapacitados del Lago.

Black Swan

Hacienda del Lago, the five-star boutique hotel and restaurant in Ajijic, is now presenting the musical duo Black Swan with Diamonds performing a different repertoire on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and focusing on music in French for “French Thursdays.”

The duo features French pianist Yann Kostic and Mexican singer Gabriela “Gaby” Santiago, who blend musical styles from around the world, giving them a diverse repertoire that appeals to all ages.

The first dinner sitting is at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.

ASA

Visitors to the recent Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) exhibit at the Ajijic Cultural Center voted for People’s Choice Awards.  Ella Fournier was in first place for her pencil drawing “Reverie” and second place for her oil painting “Frieda’s Dream.”  Flo Rhodes’ jewelry piece “Gift of the Gods” was third, Mary Anne Linhart was fourth for her mixed media work “Spring Oracle,” and Lois Schroff fifth for her watercolor “Summer Sensation.”
