Ribera arts review - February 14, 2014

Showstoppers 8 performed by members of Los Cantantes del Lago will be presented on Sunday, February 16, 4 p.m. at St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.  The bar is open at 3 p.m.

This show of “showstopper” numbers has become one of the most awaited events at Lakeside.  Dave McIntosh is the emcee again (back by popular demand).  This concert promises even more fun with new performers, instrumentalists and, of course, the ever popular Timothy G. Ruff Welch accompanying on piano.

This time, Los Cantantes are branching out from Broadway to include “Showstoppers” of all kinds.

This concert is a benefit to help Los Cantantes del Lago defray costs when they perform in local venues for free.  Tickets costing 200 pesos (100 pesos for students) are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Mia’s Boutique, from any Cantantes member or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Hooray for Hollywood!

Lakeside Little Theatre’s musical “Hooray For Hollywood!”, written and directed by Barbara Clippinger,  opens on Friday, February 21 and runs through Tuesday, March 4.  Alexis Hoff is choreographer and Judy Hendrick is music director.

Clippinger has created an original story about a young screenwriter who gets a chance at fame in Hollywood.  A studio bigwig gives her six months to get a presentation together to show to the “suits.” If they like it ... he’ll make her movie.  In her “Movie” we get to hear some wonderful songs from the Golden Age of Hollywood, those songs that never won an Oscar … in fact, they weren’t even nominated.  It is truly amazing how many well-known songs fall into that category.

Tickets for the show are 250 pesos.  Show times are weekday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and on Sundays at 3 p.m.  There is no performance on Monday, February 24.  The Box Office will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, from Wednesday, February 19 and through the run of the show (except for the Sunday matinees), and one hour before curtain time for each performance.
