Ribera Arts Review - September 6, 2014

Mariachi Festival

The International Mariachi Festival comes to Ajijic on Saturday, September 6 for a gala show at the  Auditorio de la Ribera. The program will feature rousing performances by two mariachi groups, plus dancing by the local  Ballet Folklórico Xicantzy. Tickets cost 200 pesos at the door, including a free tequila cocktail. Additional drinks and typical Mexican dishes will be available on the premises.

Proceeds will benefit the Pepe Martínez Nuevos Pasos Equine Therapy program.

JPO trips

Viva La Musica is planning another series of fall bus trips to attend concert performances of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) in the Guadalajara’s historic Teatro Degollado.  

The bus trips are scheduled to leave lakeside for the Friday concerts at 4:30 p.m.  The schedule allows time for the bus to stop for dinner at a nice restaurant. Lakesiders will depart at 10:30 a.m. to arrive in time to attend Sunday afternoon concerts. Buses leave from the Carretera just east of Farmacia Guadalajara.

Trip dates are Sunday, September 2; Friday, September 26; Sunday, October 5; Friday, October 10; Sunday, October 26; Friday, November 14 (opera); Sunday, November 30 (opera); Friday, December 12.

Tickets are on sale at Lake Chapala Society box office from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday and Fridays. The price per trip for Viva members is 300 pesos. Non-members will pay 400 pesos. For additional information phone Marshall Krantz at (376) 766-2834.

Club Ukulele

Members of Lakeside’s Club Ukulele Laguna met on Monday, September 1 for their regular First Monday Jam Day. Shown above from left are Marie Laframboise, Larry Laframboise and Cynthia Gentry, three of the new group’s dozen members.  Club Ukulele meets at the Center Cultural de Ajijic from 2 to 4 p.m. on Mondays.

Art openings

Two cocktail art openings are planned at the Centro Cultural de Ajijic on Friday, September 12 to kick off the Independence Day celebrations. The first event, on the lower level of the center features a selection of Efren Gonzalez’s wet technique watercolor paintings. Gonzalez is opening this unusual showing at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception.

At 7 p.m. guests will want to move to the upper level of the cultural center to celebrate the opening of Beto Rock’s annual Fotos de Septiembre show with another cocktail. This exhibition of photography is always a a special show at the center.

Jazz

Solo jazz guitarist Juan Castañón is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 6 in the coffee house atmosphere of La Rueda, the popular San Juan Cosalá Gallery and Café.  La Rueda is located at Porfirio Diaz 120 in San Juan Cosalá.
