Dia de los Muertos Show

The work of local jewelry artist Sacha Frowine will be featured at Galeria Sol Mexicano from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 1. Frowine has designed a line of special themed pieces to celebrate el Dia de los Muertos. Galeria Sol Mexicano is at Colón 13 in Ajijic.

Betrayal

“Betrayal,” a play by Nobel Prize-winning author Harold Pinter, opens on Friday, November 7 and runs through Sunday, November 16 at the Lakeside Little Theater (LLT).

Directed by Neal Checkoway, the play stars veteran Dave McIntosh as the husband and introduces two newcomers to the LLT stage – Jacinta Stringer as his cheating wife, Emma, and Richard Varney as his best friend and Emma’s lover. Geoff Long also features as an Italian waiter.

Tickets are 225 pesos at the LLT box office from 10 a.m. to noon every day, except Sunday, beginning November 5, and one hour before each performance. Galeria Axixic Collective

The works of a dozen accomplished lakeside artists will be in the limelight at the fifth annual collective show, opening Friday, November 7, 3 to 8 p.m., with a cocktail reception at Galeria del Arte Axixic. The gallery is located at the corner of Ocampo and Rio Zula at the west end of Ajijic.

The exhibit will showcase paintings, etchings, sculptures, glass art and retablos created by De Paul Durham, Trish Gardiner, Anotnio López Vega, Carmen Bordes, Judy Dykstra Brown, Jesús López Vega, Gabriel Mariscal, Pat Apt, Mayor Benton, Patricia Sánchez, Isidro Xilonsochitl and Daniel Williams.  
Renaissance, Baroque

Soprano Katia Sánchez and classical guitarist Jim Byers will appear in concert Sunday, November 9, 4 p.m., at Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo (the old railway station building). The program will showcase songs of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, including pieces by John Dowland, Girolamo Frescobaldi, and G. F. Handel.

Sánchez began her musical studies at the age of six, going on to pursue a degree in vocal music at the University of Guadalajara’s School of Music. She has been a member of the Jalisco State Chorus since 1999, and has performed as a soloist with Ensemble Siglos Pasados directed by Enrique Florez, and the José Goart Zarzuela group. She has also appeared on stage in musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar. She is founder and director of the a capella vocal group Magna Voce, featuring music of colonial Mexico and the Renaissance.

A long-time enthusiast of early music, Byers has studied under masters of classical guitar such as Michael Lorimer, Oscar Ghiglia, Philip Roshegar and David Mozqueda, as well as distinguished lutenists Paul O’Dette and Nigel North.

Noche de Rural Rock

Lauro Brujito will be entertaining with a Noche de Rural Rock at the Spa Thermal Tlalocan in Chapala on Saturday, November 8, beginning at 8 p.m. The cost for hotel guests is 130 pesos. Services available include a variety of hydrotherapies: mineral, floral or clay baths, and temazcales.

Bamberg String Quartet

The Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club will present the world-renowned Bamberg String Quartet in concert on Thursday, November 13, 3 p.m. in Chapala’s historic Centro Cultural González Gallo (the old railway station building).

The ensemble, founded in 1975 by members of the Bamberg, Germany, Symphony Orchestra, will perform Haydn’s “Quartet in E major, Op. 20; Mozart’s Quartet in E minor KV 421” and Beethoven’s “Quartet in G Major Op. 18.” This group has performed in Europe, Asia, and in North and South America.

Tickets are 200 pesos and can be purchased at the door, at Diane Pearl Colecciones or at Charter Club Tours in Ajijic, or from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday and Friday at the Lake Chapala Society. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club’s community service projects, including Love in Action children’s shelter, educational and job training scholarships, soccer and tennis team sponsorships for at-risk children

Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting of the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club at 10 a.m. every Thursday at the Montecarlo Hotel in Chapala.
