October’s natural blessings

Like most old hands at lakeside living, I always look forward to October as the month when our marvelous climate is at its very best.

As the rainy season tapers off, we usually enjoy warm sunny days and cool, but not frosty, nights. Average temperatures range from a high of 25.4 degrees Celsius (77.7° F.) to a low of 15.1 Celsius (68.5° F.). What’s not to love about that kind of comfort zone? No need to turn on fans to beat daytime heat or light up fireplaces and space heaters to ward off an after-dark chill.

This is the time of year to hike the local terrain or take a drive to nearby mountain towns to catch sight of fall wildflowers in full bloom. Early in the day you find patches of morning glories spread out over the landscape. Places such as Mazamitla and Tapalpa and routes along the way are surrounded by broad fields dotted with cosmos, marigolds, black-eyed Susans and other endemic flowering plants.
