Lakeside residents who have been here for at least four years may recall the public flak raised over the start of the Chapala-Jocotepec Ciclovía project, with some critics saying it was a waste of money for something that would have little use.
Well, like the proverbial “Field of Dreams” storyline, it turned out that if you build it, people will come.
These days you can observe plenty of folks pedaling along the two-lane cycling path, particularly in the early hours of the day as local laborers head off to work and sport bikers get out to exercise before midday heat kicks in.
It’s clear that business is booming for shops that trade in bicycle sales and rentals. Good news for both the local economy and everyone joining the rising trend in cycle riding promoted as a non-motorized mode of transport.
The Ciclovía is also shared space for pedestrians who practice jogging, walking exercise for themselves or their dogs, and leisurely strolls pushing baby carriages.
