Covid-19 spawns deluge of phony websites, phishing emails

In the midst of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, cybercriminals are not letting a good panic go to waste.

As the coronavirus pandemic spreads the criminals all see it as an opportunity to take their scams to a worldwide audience of gullible victims. Amid all the current hysteria criminals see opportunities for financial fraud and tricking panicked users into downloading malware or purchasing fake products.

RiskIQ is a California-based computer security company that provides countermeasures against fraud, malware, and security threats for its commercial customers. The company is now publishing a list of new malicious coronavirus-related domain names. The list is available at www.riskiq.com. The company documented more than 13,500 newly-created suspicious domains on March 15; 35,000 more the next day; more than 17,000 the day after that; and still counting.
