As we reflect on the tech news of the past 12 months, stories have ranged from virtual reality games to foldable smartphones. Yet, the topic dominating much of the conversation this year has been artificial intelligence (AI), particularly ChatGPT.
Public reactions to AI remain sharply divided. Some hail products like ChatGPT as groundbreaking advancements for humanity’s future, while others express growing concerns about the existential risks AI poses. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office added to the debate by introducing a rule stating that AI systems cannot be listed as inventors on patent applications—at least, not yet.
In other government-related tech news, the United States has moved to enforce a nationwide ban on TikTok. Lawmakers cite national security and data privacy risks due to the platform’s ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party. A deadline of January 19 has been set for TikTok to cease operations in the United States.
