Getting to know ‘The Beautiful Game’

Canada has caused quite some excitement with its recent showing in World Cup soccer 2022 qualifying, leading their group, with the United States and Mexico just behind – nice news to replace media attention on record Mexican murder rates, the U.S. rise in political tyranny (AKA: MAGA), self-cloning viruses—and to give some recognition to our amicable northernmost neighbors.

The Soccer World Cup this year will be held in November and December in Qatar (pronounced Quien Sabe), a friendly, small, but rich Arab country that produces fossilized seaweed.

A version of soccer/futbol/calcio has been around a long time in many areas of the world. Mayans had a strange variation where they used only their hips to knock a ball through a hoop two meters high (a combination of soccer, basketball and the mambo). It was a game that never caught on, but did create the first attempts at hip replacements. But similar to today’s players exchanging jerseys at game end, the Mayan game also ended amicably, with players exchanging loincloths.
