Thanksgiving can be a poignant celebration of gratitude. But it should also remind us of what we have and take for granted.
There’s a quirky logic to Thanksgiving’s implied message that consuming huge quantities of food in one day will somehow inspire the foodless people of the world. (??)
The real advantage this year: The endless stories and photos of Donald Trump on the news media have been replaced by butt-end illustrations on how to prepare and cook a turkey. The content’s the same, but the visual’s a relief.
Plus, there’s this noteworthy connection to the past: Benjamin Franklin thought that the best symbol to represent his new nation was the turkey with its gobble gobble. A foretelling, given the current state of the United States.
Anyway, take a look at historic snapshots of Thanksgiving here (don’t try to click).
