Some time ago, I stumbled upon a country road that might just be the most beautiful drive in the greater Guadalajara area. This 25-kilometer stretch north of the city connects Highways 23 and 54, offering stunning views of the Huaxtla Canyon. Along the way, it opens up a world of hiking, biking, picnicking, and even canyoneering opportunities.
The first half of the drive is well-known to Tapatíos who love nature and hiking. A short drive from the northwestern Periférico takes you onto Highway 23, heading toward San Cristóbal and Jerez. Just 17 kilometers from Tesistán, you turn onto a narrow, but well-paved road that leads to the small town of Huaxtla. Immediately, you’re surrounded by rolling hills dotted with curiously shaped rocks that resemble the famous Piedras Bolas of Ahualulco.
