LGBTQ+ rights in 2025 — Mexico leads while US retreats

As Pride Month unfolds, one glaring contrast stands out: Mexico is making bold, visible strides in support of its LGBTQ+ community, while the United States seems to be moving backward—blurring the once-celebrated rainbow flag in the process.

In January 2025, the new administration in Washington began a sharp pivot, distancing itself from the inclusive stances of previous years. Executive orders from Trump limiting LGBTQ+ rights—especially targeting transgender protections—set the tone for this regressive shift. As a result, June’s Pride Month, once celebrated with pomp and support, even during the first Trump presidency, has been notably erased from the federal agenda. Instead, the White House has bizarrely replaced it with Title IX Month, which commemorates the educational amendments signed into law in 1972.

Under past administrations, the U.S. State Department consistently sent an inclusive message, championing the rights of same-sex couples around the globe.

That approach appears to have ended. The agency is now toeing the line, avoiding all references to Pride Month, with foreign service officers likely ordered to comply at their own risk.
