Frozen in time

Sharp-eyed visitors to downtown Guadalajara may notice that the hands of the clock sitting above the main balcony of the Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) in the Plaza de Armas do not move. In fact, the clock has not been telling Tapatios the time since January 30, 1915.

Closer inspection of the clock reveals another curiosity: a single bullet hole lodged in the round glass casing, close to the center.

According to legend, on that day almost 90 years ago, one Jesus Medina, brother of then Jalisco Governor Julian Medina, fired a shot into the clock just as the forces of Pancho Villa entered the city.  A supporter of the famous caudillo from Chihuahua, Jesus Medina reportedly wanted to stop the clock so the exact time of this great, historical moment would be recorded for ever.  He appears to have achieved his goal.
