On Tuesday, January 28, Lori Vinh Sok Brown will be sharing her unique and inspirational story of how, as a 22-year old, she escaped the killing fields of Cambodia with her two young children in the late 1970’s.
Because of the genocide by Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge that would kill – through execution, starvation and disease – roughly two million people, she was forced to abandon her beloved home. She, and many others in her village, suffered 18-hour working days in inhumane conditions in the hot blistering sun with little food and water to survive. With hope and determination, she miraculously journeyed her way to freedom, through landmines, blood- infested ponds filled with corpses, four painful years in filthy dirty concentration camps, and several years waiting in refugee camps, before eventually being sponsored to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1981.
