Longtime benefactress in need of helping hand

Marvin and Helaine Harthcock  are well known fixtures in the Lakeside landscape. For 18 years the couple has always been willing to lend a hand and help out when and where needed.

Many Lakeside children began a lifetime love affair with music thanks to the Harthcocks’ dedication to the Golden Strings music group, they were instrumental in keeping viable for so long.  Many students have been able to continue their education thanks in part to the Harthcocks stepping up and helping to cover the costs of schooling.

Now Lakeside has the chance to return the favors and kindnesses of the Harthcocks. Helaine, who suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), was in a devastating car accident June 4. She suffered a severe concussion, a broken wrist and arm, broken hand bones, four broken ribs and a broken jaw. She is recovering but it is going to be a slow, drawn out and expensive process. She has insurance but the insurance company keeps coming up with more reasons why they can’t cut a check to cover the expenses incurred at the Chapala Red Cross, two hospitals in Guadalajara and a nursing home at Lakeside. The bill so far is in the many hundreds of thousands of pesos.

The “Friends of Helaine” are putting on a Getting Better Party and fundraising event on Tuesday, July 29 the Country Club de Chapala clubhouse in Vista del Lago, just a few miles east of Chapala. The party will run from from 3-6 p.m., and there is no charge to go.  Entertainment will be provided by the Orquesta Filarmonica de la Ribera de Chapala, the almost world-famous Mixed Notes Barbershop Quartet, and the occasional story about Helaine. There will be a cash bar, silent auction, 50/50 raffles and more surprises.

The venue and light snacks are being provided by the Country Club de Chapala, and the first 100 ladies will get a rose provided by the Viva Mexico restaurant.

All those invited are asked to bring their checkbooks or cash and make a healthy donation. All monies collected will go to covering Helaine Harthcock’s ongoing medical expenses.

Those not able to attend can contribute by going to www.gofundme.com/Friends-of-Helaine and making a donation by Visa or Mastercard.
