Raquet Club opens new courts with free tournament

A group of Mexican and expat tennis aficionados have been working with San Juan Raquet Club pro Juan Carlos Castro to construct four new clay courts.

With the courts now finished, Castro and his investors are hosting a weekend inauguration on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26 from 9 a.m. to noon on both days.

While all 16 of the amateur spots in Sunday’s pro-am tournament filled within 24 hours, there are still plenty of slots available in Saturday’s free round robin competition for those anxious to try out the new courts.

In addition, there will be free lessons and/or clinics for anyone ready to learn the game or improve their skills. Those interested in participating in the round robin event or the clinics should contact Castro at This email address is being protected from spambots. Be sure to specify the tournament or the clinics for beginners or advanced players. Assisting Castro with the clinics will be his younger brother Willy, who is an expert at training children to play tennis.

On Saturday’s free tennis day, attendees are asked to bring a pot-luck dish to share after play ends at noon.

Those attending Saturday’s event are also invited to visit the club’s new pickleball courts. This game, played on a quarter-sized court, combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis and is becoming immensely popular, especially among those who are less mobile. It’s a fun game with lots of laughs.

After the tournament and during lunch the professional players will play an exhibition doubles match, and representatives from Wilson will demonstrate their new technology racket. A “chip” reads a player’s strokes, and reports spins, slices, and which part of the racket is hitting the ball.

In the future, these courts will be open to the public for a small fee. To reserve a court on any other day or for lessons, contact Castro by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling (33) 1486-7173.
