Rev. Matt Aslpaugh will speak on “What Is It About Growth?” Sunday, January 19 at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF).
The Lake Chapala UU Fellowship has had notable growth in recent years. The numbers are up – members, attendance, giving. But are these the only ways we grow? We’ll look at other aspects of growth, beyond the numbers, and consider how a balanced, holistic approach to growth might help us avoid growing pains that might otherwise develop.
A pizza lunch and the LCUUF annual general meeting will be held following the service.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Sunday, January 19, the Reverend Dr. Jim Priddy will preside and preach at St. Andrew’s service of Holy Eucharist, 10 a.m. Coffee hour, a time of fellowship and welcome, follows the service.
Sunday, January 26, St. Andrew’s will celebrate the long service of the Reverend Iris Slocombe and her husband Bert. Iris was the first rector of St. Andrew’s, serving in that capacity from 1999 to 2005.
Every Sunday, Operation Feed, a program supported by St. Andrew’s, welcomes donations of non-perishable food items. Boxed milk and empty cardboard egg cartons are especially welcome, in addition to rice, beans, pasta, lentils, garbanzos, oats, oil and salt. The parish distributes these foodstuffs to the Lakeside’s neediest families.
Decluttering? If so, don’t forget Todo Bueno. Donations or consignments benefit St. Andrew’s Outreach Ministry. Everything from clothing, kitchenware, electronics, books, furniture, appliances, collectibles to sports equipment are welcomed.
Todo Bueno is on the Carretera, just west of S&S Auto in Riberas del Pilar. Open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Volunteers are needed to serve as sales clerks at Todo Bueno. Shifts include 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Little Chapel by the Lake
Sunday, January 19, Brother Robert Janisse will speak at the 11 a.m. service about how the victory in the battle against being shaped, influenced, and conformed to this world, comes through the renewal of our minds. The more we begin to think like Christ, the more we will begin to act like Christ, and fulfill God’s purpose for us in this world. Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside, a parish of the Diocese of the West in the Anglican Church of Mexico, will observe the Second Sunday after the Epiphany on January 19, 11 a.m. in La Huerta Events Center. Rev. Jim Powers will celebrate and give a message with the theme “The Lamb of God,” based on John 1:29-42.
Sunday School (in Spanish) convenes during the service at the Gospel Reading. Young people are welcome to share this time of lessons and discovery.
Coffee and refreshments are available before and after the service. After the service, there will be a potluck in the Church hall. Following the potluck, all church parishioners are invited to stay for the Annual General Meeting of the church.
Tuesday, January 21, at about 1:15 p.m., there will be a GAM Food Distribution at the last soccer field on Calle Revolucion (the street where Ajijic’s Wednesday market is held). Help is always needed to fill the buckets with food.
The Bible Study meets on Thursday, January 23, 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Carroll’s home, Galeana 35 in Ajijic. All are welcome to learn about the inspired contents of the Bible and share their insights with each other.
Lakeside Presbyterian
Dr. Wayne Cook continues to examine the Lord’s Prayer. The fourth couplet reads: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” The Bible says we fight not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. Alone, we would be overwhelmed, so this is a prayer of protection against temptation and evil.
No doubt, you have noticed LPC’s tagline, “You Have Family at Lakeside!” Indeed, we are a family of volunteers working together to leave things better than we found them; there is something happening seven days a week at our church. Preparing and delivering despensas (food staples) for hungry families, visiting the sick and those in prison, providing medical services and reaching out to those afflicted by addiction to drugs and to those who are lonely, providing healthy breakfasts to hungry students, weekly instruction to those wishing to improve their circumstances, a continuing literacy program for youngsters who have no opportunity to attend school ... this is only a partial list. And the initiatives grow monthly.

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Galatians 5:13-14)
Servitude is not a glamorous concept. Who in their “worldly” mind would sign up for a life of servitude? And yet that is what God has in mind for his people. God knows how service to others will bless us as well as the community around us. Service is a great way to put aside our self-centeredness and notice how we are connected, even indebted, to others. None of us became the people we are alone, but by the sacrifice and investment of many others from our earliest years. And that doesn’t take into account what Christ has done for us. When we start seeing the genuine needs of others, it deters our own sense of entitlement. Serving others not only reveals the bonds between us; it reflects the love of God. It points people to Christ. He sacrificed himself for us, though we deserved nothing. His example calls us to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). In our “me-first” culture, God calls us to put others first. What a challenge! Are we looking out for others the way we look out for ourselves? Can we put their needs ahead of our own? How are you serving in your community?
