Mexican street food, called antojitos (“little cravings”), can offer a vast variety of Mexican dishes from tacos, tamales, tostados, burritos to soups, pates and more.
Street food has had significant impact on haute cuisine in Mexico, with upscale restaurants now serving many of the same foods as you will find en la calle. Several times, I was surprised to see one of Ajijic’s most revered chefs sitting on the Carretera, road dust flying in the air, eating his lunch at a street vendor.
Street food here should not be trivialized. It can be as inspired as anything on pricier menus.
