Weekly Worship - August 05, 2023

Lakeside Presbyterian Church

This Sunday, August 6 Pastor Wayne will start a new series on the Book of John. It is very different than the other Gospels.

The greatest Word. There are many titles and names given to Jesus. When the early Christians tried to tell the Jews about Jesus, it was pretty easy. They all had Jewish backgrounds, so it was easy to use phrases like the “Son of David,” “Messiah” and “Son of God.” He also had names like Jesus (Savior) and Immanuel (God With Us). But how do you tell someone about Jesus who has a different background?

The answer is that you start with something they understand and then move on from that to Jesus. This is

exactly what John has done here as he writes to Greek--speaking people. He calls Jesus “the Word of God.” The Greeks often talked about the Word of God. They were impressed that the world is a systematic and orderly place. So they asked, “What keeps the stars on their course? What makes the sun rise and set? What makes the seasons keep their appointed times? What puts reason in man? What makes order out of what might have been chaos?” The answer they gave to all these was the same: “the word of God.” John is saying, “You have been talking about the Word of God and the Word of God has now come to the earth.”

English-language service begins Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and also streams each live at facebook.com/LPCChapala. Everyone is welcome to Wednesday drop-in Bible study at 10 a.m.

If you need a ride, or more information, call 376-106-0853 before 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Coffee and refreshments after the service in the Narthex.

Lake Chapala Baptist Church

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:36-40).

These are the two commandments that Jesus gave us. “Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:25-28). God loves all his children and expects us to do likewise regardless of their race, gender, or beliefs. All His children are the ones he expects us to love. It doesn’t matter whether we agree with them or not, whether we even know them or not. Love and faith in God give us the ability to love our neighbors.

Pastor John Whitener will be bringing the message. Lake Chapala Baptist Church, Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar. English-language worship service is Sunday, August 6, 10:45 a.m. The Spanish-language worship service is at 12:30 p.m. Information: 331-608-0856.

The seminar, which ends on Wednesday, August 9, 10 to 11:30 a.m., will be held at St. Andrew’s Anglican, and will also cover the role of lectionary art that serves to enhance each Anglican/Episcopal scriptural engagement and understanding. Pastor Michelle says that the seminar has been both an intellectually and visually stimulating experience.

“When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.” (Neh. 1:4)

Our world is changing fast. Let us consider how we respond to God’s hard providences.

When things fall apart, we have instinctive reactions, yet we Christians are called to respond instead with fervent prayer and persistent supplication. The normal reaction to hard times is to begin fretting, burning with concern; then we share our concerns with others, passing along our worries. But Nehemiah’s way was to talk and walk with God.

Have you allowed circumstances to overwhelm you? Follow Nehemiah’s example. Ask great things from God and then expect them. When you pray, remember God’s greatness and praise Him; acknowledge His total sovereignty and that He is the one true, living God of Heaven. Then turn your problem over to Him.

In the shade of His grandeur we are moved to confess our own smallness and our sins. Ask with extreme humility. Plead with God from your broken heart. Be persistent, it’s a virtue in prayer. This awesome, mighty God has a special relationship with us: He is our Father. He’s big enough to control it all. He reigns! And everyone who submits to God is His own.
