Weekly Worship - August 26, 2023

Lakeside Presbyterian

Sunday, August 27, Pastor Wayne will talk about the Testimony of John the Baptist.

Within his gospel narrative, John presents six individuals who bear witness to Christ. The initial witness was a different John, Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist. Though John the Baptist may strike us as odd, his strangeness was evident in his own time as well. He clothed himself in animal hides and subsisted on honey and wild locusts.

It was evident that he defied the norm for a priest. Priests typically wore pristine white linen. They adhered to a diet of ritually clean, kosher foods, as opposed to consuming insects.

The religious authorities regarded John the Baptist with skepticism. Their displeasure stemmed from his ability to attract sizable crowds in remote areas. His penchant for referring to the religious leaders as a “brood of vipers” likely didn’t improve their opinion of him.

English-language service begins Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and also streams each live at facebook.com/LPCChapala. Spanish service starts at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to Wednesday drop-in Bible study at 10 a.m.

If you need a ride, or more information, call 376-106-0853 before 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Coffee and refreshments after the service in the Narthex.

Calle San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar.

Lake Chapala Baptist

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)

John 3:16 is one of the most known and beloved Scriptures in the Bible. It gives us hope and promise but it isn’t finished there. John 17 completes the words, and they are powerful. Jesus came to save the world. Not just you and me, but everyone regardless of their beliefs or actions. God loves all his people. If we are to follow His word, we must also love all His people. “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.) (1 John 4:20). Jesus taught Love. It is our responsibility to follow where He has led.

Heritage Baptist Church

Sunday’s passage from Nehemiah 3:1-27 details a story which represents a perfect metaphor for today’s Church. After the destruction of Jerusalem, the surviving Jewish remnants were true and valiant. From them, we learn that God’s ultimate purpose in keeping His children safe is so that they might worship Him.

As believers in the gospel, our goal is to do everything for the glory of God. As a Church called to His wisdom and will, we can accomplish this ongoing goal by working in unity, using our gifts and accumulated skills to create supreme acts of worship.

In rebuilding Jerusalem, all were called to different tasks. Whenever God gives you a task, then, give Him thanks! And do nothing through your own self, but always work with God’s will.

What is your calling, Christian? With the same goal, Christ’s children can labor side by side for God’s own glory!

Heritage is a fledgling Baptist Church seeking out our eternal family, one precious soul at a time. Join us  in the “Upper Room” at the Presbyterian Church in Riberas (please use the side entrance nearest the lake). Sundays at 11:15am: Open prayer, then wisdom direct from the Word. Wednesdays: Bible study at 4:30. Info: This email address is being protected from spambots. Unitarian Universalist

Sunday, August 27, Loretta Downs will present “This is Your Life, Give it a Good Ending” at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Living fully means considering all along the way, how we are living and what we can leave behind as our legacy whether as actions, values, relationships, and/or tangibles. Leaving a legacy is like tossing a rock into a pond. There is an initial splash followed by ripple effects that continue on once the rock has disappeared. You might have a small rock to throw, or a big boulder, but each one of us will leave something behind us. It’s up to us to decide how far those ripples will travel! The service will share the importance of leaving a legacy, as well as how to do so.

Jane Castleman will be the service associate.

A Special Legacy Giving Presentation by Lorna Dean is also on the schedule.

Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship services are Sundays, 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261, Riberas del Pilar, next to Doppio Café, across the road from the Catholic Church.
