Weekly Worship - August 31, 2024

Heart of Awareness

The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community offers the opportunity to meditate in a supportive environment at its Practice Center (Guadalupe Victoria 101, Ajijic). Weekly practice sessions are Sundays and Wednesdays. Chairs and cushions are provided.

Sunday, September 1: 9 to noon. Each “1st Sunday” of the month offers 3 contiguous hours of practice. Join us for 1, 2, or 3 hours. Each hour includes sitting and walking meditation.

Wednesday, September 4: 4 to 6:15 p.m.: One hour of sitting and walking meditation (4 to 5 p.m.). September’s theme “Sangha As Practice” continues. “Sangha is both integral and foundational—more than a place, or the people who practice there. By sharing and nourishing roots in the fertile soil of a practice community, even the smelly manure of our experience can transform to heal self and society,” says Senior Dharma Teacher Marty Janowitz.

Join online via Zoom at heartofawareness.org.

Afterward, all are invited for a “Social Time” dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Thursday, September 5, 1-2:30 p.m.: Thursday’s Book Practice/Study Group continues reading “The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World, by the Dalai Lama.” Newcomers welcome. Owning the book isn’t required, a library copy is shared.

Lake Chapala Baptist

Nobody likes to feel like they are missing out. In 1913 “Pop Momand” started a comic strip called “Keeping up with the Joneses.” It ran until 1940 making fun of our jealousy of others and the fear that we are missing out on something. The phase lived on. In 2004, Patrick McGinnis satirized Harvard students as having FOMO—fear of missing out — and again the label stuck. Today, we scroll our favorite social networks and suppose that the curated collections of photos are real life. What if we’re missing out? Envy and fear steal our contentment. Ironically, ancient text says the one thing we should fear missing out on is rest. Join us as we explore the Bible in Hebrews chapter 4. What if to get the most valuable thing, you have to let go of something worth less? Is it worth your effort to enter real rest?

English worship service is Sundays at 10:45 a.m. with Pastor Dan Klassen. Spanish worship service follows at 12:40 p.m. English-language Bible study is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday at 10 .am. Writing from the Heart Janice Kimball, author of numerous books and articles, speaks to us about the profoundly meaningful exercise of writing to discover the wholeness of who and what we are. Whether we write to communicate to others, or just to more deeply understand our own history and experiences, we are left with the opportunity to bridge the chasm between information and true understanding. Carol Johnson is the service associate.

Sunday service is  at  noon, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s location at San Luis 19 in Riberas del Pilar.
