Unitarian Universalists
Rev. D’Vorah Kelley will speak on “Life, Death and Everything In-Between: The Poems of Mary Oliver” at the next meeting of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
Mary Oliver was a prolific award-winning poet before her death in 2019. Her poems often touch on spiritual topics like God and prayer, even though she rarely talked much about churches, official beliefs, or other things people often associate with religion. She became an unconventional spiritual teacher for many people because she wrote a lot about God, what might come after death, and the questions all humans face about why we are here. “We all wonder about God,” Mary said. “Who is God? What’s going to happen when we die?”
Priscilla Taylor is the service associate.
Sunday service is at noon, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s new location at San Luis 19 in Riberas del Pilar and online. See lakechapalauu.org for a Zoom link.

Thirty years ago, Nelson Mandela completed his journey from prisoner to president. He initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission where those who had suffered under apartheid could be heard and those who had committed the crimes could confess. When the mother of a murdered activist chose to forgive a police officer for his crime, everyone realized something powerful was happening. But Mandela was uniquely fit to foster reconciliation. Twenty seven years in prison had not set him on a path to revenge. His suffering gave him insight to navigate true reconciliation.
In Hebrews 5:8-9 we read that Jesus learned through suffering. Having completed that journey, he has become the source of reconciliation for all who follow in his footsteps.
No one likes suffering, but let’s not waste it either! What if your struggles are the very things that will lead you to being fully alive? Come explore with us!

Sermon title for Sunday, October 20 is “Peace, Solitude, and Simplicity” from John 14:23-27.
Shalom is a Hebrew word that can mean peace, harmony, wholeness, and tranquility. In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness and delight. In our current sermon series, Pastor Carolyn is looking at the fruit of the Spirit in light of several Christian disciplines—spiritual habits that can transform us into what God wants. And God wants us to have inner peace, as well as to live in peace with others. Let’s find out how to get there even in our modern, anxious lives.

Paul says, since Christ is in heaven interceding for you, and since heaven is your destination, live now like a citizen of heaven.
Imitate Christ who ascended from earth into heaven for you. “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Paul said, “to live is Christ and to die is gain”. What makes being in heaven so wonderful is ultimately the presence of God Himself being with His image bearing man, as it was in Eden. Colossians 3:2 says “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This earth directs our attention to things we see, things that make us feel good, things that satisfy our fallen, depraved natures. But Paul reminds us; your Savior is in heaven, and so you’re to focus your attention there where He is.

Eckankar
Everything revolves around love. It always does. No matter how much we rush about in this world and how harried, ambitious, or sorrowful we become, the world stays together for some reason. The reason is God’s love. God’s love is the fabric that draws us all here. It makes the whole work, even though sometimes it looks like nothing is working at all.
The two supreme laws are: God is love, and Soul exists because God loves it.
But how do you make this work out in everyday life? Whenever you’re in doubt about any action, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it Kind? You can also ask, What would love do?
Everyone has some experience with love—even a child who has a pet kitten or a dog. Soul is trying, to give back or respond to God’s love that’s coming through. (The above text is from Spiritual Wisdom on Relationships by Harold Klemp.)
You are invited to meet with other like-minded Souls for open non-denominational spiritual discussions Tuesdays, 2 to 3:15 p.m. at Lake Chapala Society. (See advertisement in the Weekly Worship section. www. eckankar .org.)
Abundant Life Church
When are you able to say that you fully understand God´s plan? One may say that as a disciple we are daily lead by Christ or even that after hearing the gospel we know God´s plan of salvation. As true believers we can never truthfully say we fully understand because God is so much bigger than we are and we come loaded down with so much baggage from our family, culture and past. Come this Sunday, October 20, as we take a look at a few examples of mature disciples of God and see that even decades after starting their walk they were still learning. Is there something that God wants to reveal to you as well?
Abundant Life is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico. Weekly Sunday worship services in English start at 10:30 a.m. and Bible studies on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Services are on the Facebook and the YouTube channel.
