Don’t forget our memory-impaired neighbors

Lakeside DayBreak Dementia Support has announced back-to-back activities planned for next weekend as the group moves forward in creating greater awareness and building a unique dementia-inclusive community.

The support group is sponsoring Eggstravaganza, an Easter-themed brunch to promote and support its Lakeside Memory Neighborhood project. The event will take place Saturday, March 28, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Paseo de la Loma 30 in Upper La Floresta. Tickets priced at 500 pesos are available through email reservations to This email address is being protected from spambots. The initiative consists of developing a residential property where people with cognitive impairments can live with dignity, independence, and quality of life. It is not a nursing home, but rather a place designed to accommodate people with special needs related to their conditions. Staff and volunteers will be fully trained on this approach, which has been tested and proven to make a huge difference in patient care.

Project leaders have secured initial funding for a deposit on a local property, and started the process of applying for Asociación Civil non-profit status. They are assembling a team of collaborators, including medical professionals and the administrator of a non-profit hospital with knowledge and experience in memory care. Experts on fundraising, grant writing, marketing and promotion are also on board.

The Rotary Club of Ajijic is partnering with DayBreak to issue tax receipts for donations from the United States. And a project proposal was drawn up for a California Rotary Club visiting here over the past week.

“We are ready to roll. We just need to get funding to allow us to purchase the property we consider the perfect place for the community-driven Memory Neighborhood,” says DayBreak founder Elly Contreras.

By popular demand, DayBreak will present a repeat performance of “To Whom We May Concern,” at the Open Circle meeting Sunday, March 29, 10:30 a.m., at the Lake Chapala Society.

Directed by Elly Contreras and facilitated by storyteller Alicia Knox, this original readers-theater stage show debuted last October. It showcases five courageous care partners in our community who share their personal dementia journeys. They offer a meaningful opportunity to understand what many others go through in real-life, day-to-day experiences.
