In-person voter assistance

The Lake Chapala Get Out the Vote (GOTV) team will be offering in-person voter assistance daily, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except Sunday, until Tuesday, September 29, at the Lake Chapala Society.

All voters who requested overseas absentee ballots should have received them by email on or before September 19. Priority will be given to voters from mail-only ballot return states (check at VoteFromAbroad.org/states), who requested their ballots but did not get them.

Health update

Skin Cancer Screenings will resume in October at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). Screenings are held 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Medical services are open to the public. During the Phase I opening of the LCS campus, no walk-ins will be allowed. Patients can call the LCS office or make an appointment in person in the office beginning September 21. The cutoff date for sign-ups is the Tuesday before the scheduled screening. The office personnel will assign appointments. The screening is free, but there will be a charge for treatment. The clinic is for skin cancer screenings and treatment only. For other dermatological concerns, contact the Riberas Medical Group to make an appointment with Dr. Ballesteros, 376-688-1244.

The Lake Chapala Society will schedule Fall Health Days for the flu shot and other shots that may be available as soon as the Mexican government releases the vaccines. Check here and at the LCS website for updates.

Spanish classes at LCS

In the Spanish in Action (Español en Acción) course, four language skills will be worked on: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral expression, and written expression. Grammar structures and vocabularies are taught in a practical and communicative way, as well as authentic and fun. The objective is that students are able to express themselves in various situations with the present and future tenses. One morning and one afternoon class is scheduled, Monday and Thursdays, from October 15 to December 7. Classes are limited to ten people. See the LCS website to register and for costs.

In the Spanish a la Carte classes, Alfredo Perez offers different options for those trying to improve their skills. All the classes are 70 minutes via Zoom, are for LCS members only and limited to nine participants.

Improve your pronunciation for Spanish by doing vocal exercises and practice r, rr, d and t sounds Wednesday, October 7 and 14, 10 to 11:10 a.m.

Conversation for advanced students who want to practice their Spanish and learn more vocabulary are held October 14, 21, and 28, noon to 1:10 p.m.

Open Circle

Open Circle is having technical problems with their videos, so they won’t be showing any videos until the last week of October. In November, Open Circle plans to have live presentations again at LCS.

American Legion

American Legion Post 7 in Chapala welcomes anyone interested in learning how their membership process works. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month, at 11 a.m.

The Post will celebrate the U.S. Navy’s birthday, Thursday, October 13, 3 p.m. They’ll supply the cake, you supply your stories.

Octoberfest at Post 7 is Saturday, October 17. Enjoy live music, Bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, rye bread and dessert. Two seatings, noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is 250 pesos. Seatings are limited. Morelos 114, Chapala; 376-765-2259.
