Open Circle

Andrés Treviño Luna will present “Jalisco’s Commitment to LGBTTTIQ+ Rights” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, June 11, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

pg16aDuring this month of Pride, Open Circle welcomes the director of Sexual Diversity for the state of Jalisco. His presentation will provide an update on the progress that has been made in Jalisco on human rights relating to the LGBTTTIQ+ community.
Treviño is making his mark as a human rights defender in Guadalajara, focused on the promotion of public policies of inclusion, equality and non-discrimination of the LGBTTTIQ+ population.
He has a degree in International Relations and a Law Degree from ITESO. He specialized in public policy design at the Institute for Research in Public Policy and Government of the University of Guadalajara and has completed diplomas in “Political innovation” and “Collective innovation in times of emergency” at the Asuntos del Sur academy.
As director of Sexual Diversity, he has promoted the implementation of a Mechanism for Attention to Victims of Discrimination (MAViD), the recognition of the right to identity of trans childhoods and adolescents, the prohibition of conversion therapies and the guarantee of civil rights, such as equal marriage and adoption without discrimination.

Gay Pride party

Democrats Abroad is celebrating LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion at a Gay Pride party, Wednesday, June 14, 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Evelia’s Restaurant Bar and Grill (next to the old train station) Gonzalez Gallo 24-B in Chapala. A live drag show, carnival games, prizes for winners, best costume and a 50/50 raffle will accompany special drink offers and great food. Everyone is welcome.

Tequila tasting

LCS Fundraising Events presents a Tequila Cata (tasting) at the Lake Chapala Society, Friday, June 16, 3 to 5 p.m. Distillery Orendain, a family legacy since 1926, will host a tasting of their line of products. The tasting is limited to 30 guests at 500 pesos per person.

Plant sale

Poco a Poco San Pedro Itzican is holding a fundraising spring plant sale and bazaar, Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Laura’s Garden Center, Hidalgo (Carretera Chapala-Ajijic) 352-B, Riberas del Pilar. American Legion Auxillary Post 7 Chapala will hold a Fathers’ Day yard sale fundraiser Saturday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, June 18, 1 to 3 p.m. All are welcome.

Dems Abroad happy hour

LLT meet and greet

Lakeside Little Theatre is opening its doors Sunday, June 18 for a meet and greet event. If you’ve never been to LLT, this is a perfect introduction to the theater and to volunteering opportunities in the community. LLT is a local nonprofit and has been providing Ajijic with fun and exciting theater since 1965. Come for an afternoon of live music, a cash bar and to see how the magic is made. Allen W. Chapala Birders

pg16bThe Lake Chapala Birders will meet Tuesday, June 20, 8 a.m. at La Cristina on the west side of Ajijic. Expect to see some shore birds and birds in the tall trees along the street. At about 10  a.m. the group retires to Fonda Doña Lola restaurant for breakfast and to complete the bird list.

How to get there: About 4 km. west from Calle Colon, look for signs for Hacienda La Cristina (near a bus stop and signs for Las Palmas), turn south and park close to the lake.

Bird walks are open to all those interested in birds, both beginners and experienced birders. Just bring binoculars. There are always knowledgeable birders on hand to identify the species.

Niños Incapacitados

Simply Joyful restaurant is sponsoring Niños Incapacitados during June.

Envelopes will be placed with your bill to enable customers to make cash donations. Wednesday, June 21, a special fundraising dinner will be held in honor of the charity. Proceeds for Simply Joyful’s spaghetti Bolognese that day will go directly to Niños Incapacitados. Tickets cost 500 pesos (drinks, salad and gratuities not included). Fundraiser

American Legion Post 7 Chapala is holding a fundraiser for Edlin Gomez, a graduate of La Ola Orphanage who is now a dental student. On the menu is a sit-down dinner with spaghetti, two sauce choices, salad, garlic bread and dessert. Live music, raffles of dinners for four at Teocintle Maiz, Yves’, Membrillos, Adelitas and many more. Also a 20-person dinner, open bar and private live band from Rangers BBQ. The event is Sunday, June 25, 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets, 350 pesos, are available at Café Negro, So Chic Boutique and Yoly’s Styling Salon.

Canada Day

ANAVETS Unit 19 Mexico is holding a Canada Day party, Saturday, July 1, at Mama’s Musical Bar in San Antonio Tlayacapan. July 4th

American Legion Post 7 Chapala will hold an Independence Day celebration, Tuesday, July 4, with a social hour beginning 2 p.m. and dinner at 3 p.m. Live music is by The Crooners. On the menu are fried chicken, baked beans, broccoli salad and dessert. Tickets, 300 pesos in advance and 350 pesos at the door, available at the Legion Post, Morelos 114 in Chapala.
