I was heartbroken to learn of the death of William Faulkner. Not the famous American author, but a charming and talented Californian musician of Irish descent who became a master of the Jalisco folk harp.
Born April 27, 1951, William died in his sleep on July 18 during an extended trip to Mexico. A funeral Mass was held the following day in Guadalajara where he was visiting at the time. His passing after battling health issues for the last few years is a profound loss for his many friends, students and admirers on both sides of the border, along with his devoted family.
After overcoming bureaucratic and financial hurdles, William’s cremated remains arrived home in Carmel-by-the-Sea where a celebration of his life took place on August 4.
William’s name may not be familiar among many lakeside expats, but quite a few have seen and heard him perform over the years at the annual harp music festival held at the Centro Cultural González Gallo in Chapala. He is in fact the founder of the Encuentro de Arpas, Salterios y Más.
