Michicihualli Festival

The Michicihualli Festival takes place March 6 to 8 at La Cochera Cultura located at Javier Mina 49 in Ajijic.

pg16bThis event features activities that blend ancestral traditions, artistic expressions and environmental awareness, and coincides with the celebration of International Women’s Day.

All events are accessible with voluntary contributions from attendees; no reservation required. The festival is open to all ages.

The festival begins Thursday, March 6 with a pilgrimage from Tempisque and Emiliano Zapata at 5 p.m., ending at La Cochera Cultural, where an exhibition of 20 local artists is followed by a poetry reading.

On Friday, March 7, Tianguis: Jardín Cochera is at 4:15 p.m., in which 15 local women-led ventures in gastronomy, art, wellness and design will be installed. Discussion panels on sustainable development and biodiversity begin at 4:45 p.m. The event finishes with a performance by La Pura Piña.

Saturday, March 8 sees a traditional market, starting 10 a.m., as well as pre-Hispanic dance, masks and printmaking. There will be discussion panels on socio-environmental projects and the role of women in Mexico’s history from 4 p.m. An outdoor screening of the film “Finding Michicihualli” is at 7:30 p.m. The festival closing at 8:30 p.m. features the pyrotechnic spectacle of the Torito.

Open Circle

Elly Contreras presents “Breaking the silence about dementia” at the next Open Circle  meeting on Sunday, March 2, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

After her husband’s diagnosis in 2015, Elly dedicated herself to understanding dementia and supporting others on this challenging journey. Fueled by her studies at the Wicking University of Tasmania in “Understanding Dementia” and “Preventing Dementia,” she is on a mission to raise awareness and create supportive communities.

Democrats Abroad

The Lake Chapala chapter of Democrats Abroad (DA) will hold their annual general meeting Monday, March 3, 4 p.m. at La Bodega Restaurant. Hear new 2025 strategies and meet the 2025-2027 officers.

Dina Titus, the U.S. Representative of southern Nevada Congressional District 1 (including Las Vegas) since 2013, will be the guest speaker. She is the Americans Abroad Caucus Chair, and a House Foreign Affairs Committee member.

Shriners Ribfest

Don’t miss the 18th annual Shriners Ribfest on Tuesday March 4 and Wednesday, March 5, 1 to 5 p.m. at Villa Encantada, Hidalgo 312 in Chapala (near Parque La Milagrosa).

This charity event supports the Lake Chapala Shrine Club’s efforts to send needy children and their parents to the Mexico City Shrine Hospital for Burns, arranges local and Guadalajara-based therapy sessions, and provides orthopedic equipment for young patients.

Pickleball tourney

The 4th International Pickleball Tournament will be held at the Raquet Club in San Juan Cosala March 14 to 16. Categories are singles open, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. No-pressure pickleball

Join in for a non-competitive and social pickleball game at the Raquet Club every Wednesday, 4 to 6 p.m. Perfect for new players or those just looking to have fun. The cost is 70 pesos per person. There is a raffle for a free pickleball lesson.

Niños St. Pat’s Day fiesta

The Romeos, Lake Chapala’s superband, will be turning you green with dance and fun at Jorge’s Place Monday, March 17, 4 p.m. Part of the ticket proceeds and all of the raffles and 50-50 draws proceeds to go to the Niños Incapacitados program. Toy Drive

The Lake Chapala Society is collecting unwrapped toys for the children of the Chapala Fire Fepartment in celebration of Children’s Day. Drop off your donations at the main Lake Chapala Society campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through April 28.

Cooking Club

The Lakeside Cooking Club held its last meeting at Club Positivo Wednesday, February 19 with the theme of decadent dining in honor of Valentine’s Day.
