Young jazzistas prepare for May 7 concert

The Salty Paw Jazz Orchestra, Puerto Vallarta’s only youth-based jazz orchestra, returns to the Jazz Foundation on Sunday, May 7, 7 p.m. for the third presentation of its First-Sunday-of-the-Month concert series.

The Salty Paw Jazz Orchestra, or Pata Salada Orquesta de Jazz in Spanish, consists of 27 young musicians eager to hone their improvisation skills.  Led by founder Victor Kris since its first rehearsal in September 2016, its instrumentation, in addition to the usual suspects of big band jazz, includes the less-typical additions of violin, clarinet and flute.  The orchestra, which doubles as a workshop, schools its participants in jazz history, music theory and ensemble playing.  According to Kris, there is no other program like it in Puerto Vallarta.

The Jazz Foundation is located at Allende 116, Puerto Vallarta Centro, just off the malecon.  There is no cover charge, but a donation of 150 pesos would be appreciated, as the orchestra relies solely upon donations for its continued existence.

In addition, if you play an instrument and are interested in joining the Salty Paw Jazz Orchestra, contact Victor Kris at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or go to the Salty Paw Jazz Orchestra facebook page.
