Lakeside artist Efren González celebrated his 20th Meet the Artist reception at Galería La Manzanilla on Friday, January 17.
González is always a popular draw, but this year’s event was truly exceptional. Attendees spilled out into the street, while mariachi music, drinks, and appetizers created a festive atmosphere.
Efren first came to La Manzanilla 20 years ago for one of the gallery’s inaugural art receptions. He fondly recalls that evening, when the gallery owners had prepared a large cooler full of beer for the event. “This is going to be great,” he thought. “There’s enough beer here for a hundred people.” But during the first hour, not a single person arrived. The owners were mortified, having persuaded him to travel all the way from Ajijic, only to find themselves alone in the gallery.
Efren, however, took it in stride. He reassured them that such things happen, and even joked to himself, “At least there’s plenty of beer.”
Deciding to step out for a short walk, he returned 30 minutes later to find a few people admiring his work. An hour later, the gallery was bustling with a lively crowd, and by the end of the night, he had sold 18 paintings.
