Street art in the area surrounding Teatro Degollado was the focus of the “Tuesday Walking Group” on a sunny morning this week.
The energetic Canadian organizer Rennie Martin briskly led a group of 14, including one baby in a stroller and one Spanish student visiting from Nebraska. The very well planned visit took in 20 or 30 works decorating walls, business facades and rolling shutters. (The number was difficult to estimate because most street paintings were surrounded by other pieces that rise to the level of street art, as well as graffiti.)
A frequent participant, Aurora King-Hedinger, had advised me that the weekly jaunt, which is publicized on Facebook (Tuesday Walking Group), “really spices up life here.” And she was right. The walkers had to be among the most talkative people in the world, except for the baby—but she smiled a lot. It didn’t hurt that we were outdoors enjoying a comfortably sunny morning for about 1 1/2 hours and stopped for breakfast afterwards at a restaurant, Los Ilustres (across the street from the Rotunda de Los Jaliscienses Ilustres), where our server likewise broke world records for cheer.
