Nature beckons at Peacock Garden

I would highly recommend that you enjoy this unique restaurant which provides a quiet retreat right in the middle of downtown Ajijic.

Colorful walls decorated with murals of indigenous people fishing in the waters of Lake Chapala adorn the entrance and a soothing fountain blocks out any street noise. An extensive garden awaits you with lush trees, plantings and flowers that you wander through to pick your favorite dining spot.

The Audubon Society would be impressed with this setting, as birds sing, a parrot squawks and magnificent peacocks roam around in the garden as you dine.

The tables are arranged under a closed patio and there are many al fresco options in this magnificent setting. The tables are nicely arranged so you feel as if you are in your private world. A good starter is the Aztec soup, which is offered at many restaurants in the area but Peacock Garden’s version seemed better. The restaurant has many salad options to choose from for lunch. I especially liked my shrimp salad served in halves of avocado. They do well with shrimp dishes such as the coconut shrimp, shrimp Alfredo and garlic shrimp with vegetables and rice. The menu covers a broad range of choices from grilled dishes, chicken dishes, steak and kebobs and Italian and Mexican fare. For dessert, order the fried ice cream or the delicious flan.

The food is good and the waiters are attentive. At night the trees and bushes are lit up, making for a romantic and festive atmosphere. Peacock Garden Restaurant is open Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Breakfast is served on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
