Lorena Ochoa golf tourney finds new home in the capital

After six successful years at the Guadalajara Country Club, the annual LPGA Lorena Ochoa Invitational will take place this year from November 13-16 at the Club de Golf Mexico in the Tlalpan suburb of Mexico City.

The club will also host the tournament in 2015 and 2016.

The world’s top 36 female golfers are invited to the event, as well as a couple of up-and-coming Mexicans.

Host Lorena Ochoa, a Guadalajara native and former world number one, will not participate this year but says she will in 2015.

Ochoa has not ruled out the possibility of being part of the Mexican team at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, when golf will be a participating sport for the first time.

November’s event  awards points toward the Rolex Rankings thus giving Mexican competitors the chance to qualify for Rio.

Said Ochoa: “At this moment Alejandra Llaneza and Margarita Ramos are the two best Mexican players and they could potentially come to this event and earn their spot for the Olympic Games. I would love to join them as a coach or in another capacity in Rio to share my experiences. We’d also like to invite the best Mexican amateur, Gaby Lopez, who is currently the highest ranked player.”

Ochoa decided to move her tournament away from Guadalajara  after the state government pulled its sponsorship of the event. Many of the female pros frequently mentioned that their visit to Guadalajara each November was one of the highlights of their year.
