Mexico only country that will see ‘Fight of the Century’ for free

U.S. boxing fans will have to pay US$100 to watch the mega-match between superstars Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather, while in Mexico the fight will be screened free of charge.

Both Televisa and Azteca, the two key competitors in Mexico’s TV market, will be showing the event.

“Televisa and Azteca must be recognized for their great commitment, for bringing to Mexico this bout for free,” the World Boxing Council said. “This has never, ever happened in any country of the world.”

Despite the fact that Mayweather is from the United States, and Pacquaio is Filipino, Mexico is heavily invested in the mega event. The Mexican Tourism Board is a sponsor and the official beer of the fight is Tecate, which is based in Monterrey. Together, these organizations contributed a record 13.2 million in sponsorship money.

Although Pacquaio was nicknamed the “Mexicutioner” in the early part of his career, owing to a propensity for defeating Mexican opposition, he is the definite fan favorite in Mexico. His aggression and powerful hands reflect the traditional Mexican approach to boxing, whereas Mayweather’s defensive, technical style is often derided as overly cautious.

The winner of the mega-bout will be awarded a diamond encrusted belt fitted with a gold plaque and 196 emeralds, estimated to be worth $US1 million. The belt was unveiled earlier this month in Mexico City and travelled to the fight venue in Las Vegas with its own private security.

As for who takes hold of the belt next, that’s entirely up to the fighters.

Mayweather versus Pacquaio will be on Azteca and Televisa, with coverage of preliminary bouts starting at 9 p.m. The main event is scheduled to begin around 10:30 p.m., but viewers should expect delays.
