A “new” tequila aged for 21 years is to about to be launched by the Casa Xalisco distillery, with the aim of establishing the drink internationally alongside vintage cognacs and whiskys.
This is an unprecedented age for an agave-based drink. Añejo (aged) tequila is normally one to three years old, while super añejo tequila – a category established in 2006 – is aged a minimum of three years.
Casa Xalisco Director General Enrique Fonesca Cerda described the launch as a “test of fire” for the company and said their motive was to produce a tequila that you can “compare without detriment to any other distilled drink.”
