New flight to Denver and other city news

Low-cost Mexican carrier Volaris will start its new direct service between Guadalajara and Denver, Colorado on July 7 with one round-trip flight each Monday.   Flights leave Guadalajara at 10:30 a.m., arriving in Denver at 12:50 p.m. The return flight takes off at 2:15 p.m. and lands in Guadalajara at 6:30 p.m.   This week, the Volaris website was offering a ticket on the July 7 inaugural flight (one way) at 3,395 pesos (258.43 dollars). A ticket with a return date of July 14 was priced at 6,548 pesos (498.50 dollars).

Lopez Cotilla ‘restaurant row’ to close to traffic

Guadalajara city hall has put forward a plan to turn the restaurant row section of Calle Lopez Cotilla into a pedestrian zone.

Dozens of eateries and bars line the seven blocks between Avenida Chapultepec and Calle Francisco Javier Gamboa. The zone becomes a hive of activity in the evenings and at weekends.  If vehicles are removed from Lopez Cotilla, city officials say they will organize cultural events to attract even more people to the area.

City bus companies toe the line

The Jalisco state government has given Guadalajara bus operators until March 31 to get their house in order and introduce fixed salaries, regular working hours and benefits for their 3,500 drivers.

The bus owners are also obliged to ensure that drivers do not work more than the hours stipulated by law, and get regular rests, with at least one day off each week. Benefits must include overtime, holiday pay, health insurance, pension payments, housing allowance and profit sharing. They must also offer incentives to drivers for “quality and productivity.”

Legal representatives for CROC PALMAC, the union representing 70 percent of the city’s bus concessions, say the time period to complete negotiations is brief but agreements can be achieved.  Owners are free to sign individual contracts with their drivers, as long as they fall within legal perimeters.
